More than 50 years ago…

·       In 1955, the Oklahoma District of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod met in Norman, authorizing the purchase of land and two apartments at 914 Elm Avenue for $22,000.00. These buildings became the home for Lutheran Student Ministry at OU for the next nine years.

·       In 1963, University Lutheran Chapel was organized, and Pastor William H. Hecht was called as the first pastor.

·       In 1964, the first service of University Lutheran Chapel was held at a fraternity house at 815 South Jenkins in Norman. Plans were approved for the building of a chapel. The congregation was officially organized on December 13, 1964.

·       On April 25, 1965, the first service was held in the new chapel.

·       In 1967, Pastor David Klumpp was called as pastor. He began his ministry on January 1, 1968.

·       In 1975, the congregation dedicated the Pentecost stained glass window which still adorns the sanctuary.

·       The focus of the congregation moved from primarily student ministry to more congregational ministry, with a specific outreach to students, seeking to involve college students in all aspects of the congregation’s life and ministries.

·       In 1986, the congregation voted to leave the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and affiliate with the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AELC), preparatory to the 1987 merger of several church bodies which would form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988.

·       In 2011-2012, the Building to Serve capital campaign resulted in the the building of a new education and office wing for the church.

·       In 2015-2017 the Building2Serve capital campaign results in the much needed renovation, expansion and construction of new kitchen, fellowship hall, and music space without any additional loans taken out on the work.

·       In 2017, the blessing and dedication of the newly renovated spaces occurred.

·       In 2021, all construction and building debts are retired.
