WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
A special welcome to visitors and guests! Please sign the welcome book located at the
end of each pew and pass it along to those seated with you. Guests are also invited to sign the guest
book in the entryway.
TODAY’S FOCUS
In Isaiah it is
the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars—it is that God who
strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus' healing work we see the hand of the
creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon's mother-in-law, we are lifted up to
health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen
the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of
prayer.
Large print bulletins and listening aids are available from an usher.
The liturgy and songs for this service are
projected on the screen at the front of the worship area.

Confession
and Forgiveness
P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who spoke light into creation, who calls us to listen and follow, who sends us to shine like stars.
Amen.
Let us come before God, confessing our sin.
Silence is kept for reflection.
P: Holy and merciful God,
C: we confess that we have sinned against our sisters and brothers and against you. We cherish the values of this world. We cause others to stumble. The earth is wounded by our excess. Have mercy, O God. Forgive us, renew us, and raise us up on eagles' wings, that we may do your will with courage and delight. Amen.
P: Hear the voice from heaven: "You are my own, my beloved."God gives power to the weary and strengthens the powerless. Be cleansed, be healed,
for in the name of + Jesus Christ, I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins and the revealing of God's reign.
Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us pray.
A brief silence is observed.
C: Everlasting God, you give strength to the
weak and power to the faint. Make us agents of your healing and wholeness, that
your good news may be made known to the ends of your creation, through Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen
FIRST LESSON Isaiah 40:21-31
21Have you not known? Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to live in;
23who brings princes to naught,
and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows upon them, and they wither,
and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
25To whom then will you compare me,
or who is my equal? says the Holy One.
26Lift up your eyes on high and see:
Who created these?
He who brings out their host and numbers them,
calling them all by name;
because he is great in strength,
mighty in power,
not one is missing.
27Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD,
and my right is disregarded by my God"?
28Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
30Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
31but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
R: The Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
SECOND LESSON 1
Corinthians 9:16-23
16If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.
19For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.
R: The word of the Lord
C: Thanks be
to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1:29-39
P: The Holy Gospel according
to the 1st chapter of St. Mark.
29As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." 38He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." 39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

together in trust and hope, we confess our faith:

And

A: …Hear us O God,
C: Your mercy is great.

OFFERING PRAYER
A: Let us pray.
A brief silence.
A: Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills
were gathered together to become one bread,
so let your church be gathered together
from the ends of the earth into your kingdom,
for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever.
C: Amen.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Canton/ALL
The presiding minister
continues:
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise…
…we praise your name and join their unending
hymn:
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your
glory. In great love you sent to us
Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached
good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.
In the
night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and
eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this
for the remembrance of me.
Again,
after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup
is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness
of sin.
Do this
for the remembrance of me.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
P: Lord, remember us in your Kingdom and teach
us to pray:
C: Our Father, who art in
heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as
it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily
bread;
and forgive
us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass
against us;
and lead us
not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
The assembly may be seated.

MARKED WITH THE CROSS of Christ
forever, we are claimed, gathered and sent for the sake of the world.” (ELCA Mission Statement)
CAMPUS MINISTRY of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America invites people in academic settings more deeply into Jesus
Christ and the community that bears his name, so that they can discover and
fulfill their vocation as disciples.
THE MISSION OF University Lutheran Church
and Student Center is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the message of
God’s abundant grace, to strengthen those who know their Lord and Savior and to
reach out to those who do not, equipping all, through Word and Sacrament, to
serve God.
WE WELCOME ALL those who
believe and trust in Jesus to the Lord’s Table to receive Holy Communion. We believe that Jesus is present in the bread
and the fruit of the vine (red wine/grape juice). Grape juice is available in the back part of
the chalice (Early Service) or in the center section of the communion tray
(Late Service). Children and others who do not commune are invited to come
forward for a blessing.
CHILDREN ARE
WELCOME at
worship. A Children’s Bulletin
and Activity Bag are available in the entryway. A Nursery is available for children
ages 4 and under. A Cry Room is
located at the rear of the sanctuary. We
have Parent Pagers to contact you if needed.
BUILD YOUR OWN
BREAKFAST
each Sunday from 9:30-10:45 AM in the Fellowship Hall. The breakfast buffet features eggs, bacon,
sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit, juice, coffee and more for a freewill
donation. Guests, visitors and students eat free.
PARKING is available in
the rear of the church. You may also
park in the two south rows of the Wesley Foundation lot and in all of the Sooners
for Christ lot (white house). Both
are located across the street.
FORMER BISHOP’S SON TO PERFORM: Our former bishop,
Floyd Schoenhals’ son Joel, will be performing a
piano concert at the University of Oklahoma at 8:00 p.m., February 23, 2012.
The concert is part of the Norton Artist Series. Joel will perform in the Paul F. Sharp Concert
Hall in the Catlett Music Center, 500 West Boyd, Norman, OK, on the OU campus.
Parking is available nearby.
ATTENTION PARENTS!! A meeting to discuss children’s choir, possible programming to utilize the new space being built, and a host of other items will be discussed, concurrent with the decorating of valentines cookies, on Feb 12th from 5-7pm. Pizza will be served. Please make it a priority to be there.
UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH AND STUDENT CENTER will observe it's 50th Anniversary as
a congregation in 2013. If you are interested in serving on a committee
to plan a celebration of this milestone, please contact the church office.
WOMEN OF THE WORD BOOK GROUP: In February, WOW will read “The Reverent”, by Sonia Gensler. Historically, she gives an accurate story of the lives of the Cherokee in the late 1800’s. The fictional part of the book is a mixed bag; stolen identity and ghosts. You’ll just have to read it!
We meet on Fridays at noon in the fellowship hall. Bring your lunch in you like. We encourage your participation, even if your can only come once or twice a month. We welcome as many different interpretations of the book and the ideas they express, as possible. That’s how we learn and grow.
For more
information, contact Mary Sue Schnell (xxx-xxxx) or just come.
VOLUNTEER COOKS ARE NEEDED For SOUL Wednesday dinner and bible studies. We are looking for some generous church members who are willing to donate dinner for about 15-18 hungry students. Please sign up for a day on the SOUL Bulletin Board in the narthex of the church. (See more details on the sign-up sheet). For many students, having a home cooked meal is the highlight of their week. We really appreciate all that you do. Contact Alissa Reed with any questions or concerns.
FLOWERS on the altar are given by Carol Hoadley in
honor of her parents.
