Week Ahead
A Service of Healing and
Wholeness
August 29, 2010
Welcome to Worship!
A special welcome to
visitors and guests! Please sign the
welcome book located at the end of each pew and pass it along to those seated
with you. Guests are also invited to
sign the guest book in the entryway.
Today’s Focus
Invited and
inviting—that is the nature of the church.
By God’s grace in holy baptism we have a place at the banquet table of
the Lord. When, by the power of that
same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us, the church can be more
inviting still.
Large print
bulletins and listening aids are available from an usher.
The liturgy and songs for this service are
projected on the screen at the front of the worship
area.

Confession and Forgiveness
P: In
the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Almighty
God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you
and
worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let
us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
The
assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection.
P: Most
merciful God,
C: we
confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we
have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved
our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy
on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and
walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
P: God,
who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive
together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus
Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through
the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
C: Amen.

C: O God, you resist
those who are proud and give grace to those who are humble. Give us the humility of your son, that we may
embody the generosity of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Word
First Lesson Proverbs 25:6-7
6 Do
not put yourself forward in the king’s presence
or stand in the
place of the great;
7 for
it is better to be told, “Come up here,”
than to be put
lower in the presence of a noble.

C: Thanks be to God.
PSALM 112 Sung Alternating Women and Men
1 Hallelujah! Happy are they who ‘ fear
the Lord*
and have great delight in ‘ his
commandments!
2 Their descendants will be mighty ‘ in
the land;*
the generation of the upright ‘ will
be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches will be ‘ in their
house,*
and their righteousness will ‘ last
forever.
4 Light shines in the darkness ‘ for the
upright;*
the righteous are merciful and full
‘ of compassion.
5 It is good for them to be gener- ‘ ous
in lending*
and to manage their af- ‘ fairs with
justice.
6 For they will nev- ‘ er be shaken;*
the righteous will be kept in
everlast- ‘ ing remembrance.
7 They will not be afraid of any ‘evil
rumors;*
their heart is right; they put their
trust ‘ in the Lord.
8 Their heart is established and ‘ will
not shrink,*
until they see their desire up- ‘ on
their enemies.
9 They have given freely ‘ to the poor,*
and their righteousness stands fast
forever;
they will hold up their ‘head with
honor.
10 The wicked will see it and be angry;
they will gnash their teeth and ‘ pine away;* the desires of the wick- ‘ed will
perish.
Second Lesson Hebrews 13: 1-8, 15-16
1Let mutual love continue. 2Do
not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have
entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those who are
in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being
tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4Let
marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled;
for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5Keep your lives
free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has
said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” 6So we can say
with confidence,
“The Lord is my
helper;
I will not be
afraid.
What can anyone
do to me?”
7Remember your leaders, those who spoke
the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate
their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and
forever.
15Through him, then,
let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of
lips that confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to
share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
R: The Word of the
Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation
The assembly stands.
Gospel Lesson Luke 14: 1, 7-14
P: The Holy Gospel according to the 14th
Chapter of Luke.
C: Glory to you O Lord!
1On
one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to
eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely…
7When he noticed how the guests chose
the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8“When you are
invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor,
in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your
host; 9and the host who invited both of you may come and say to
you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to
take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit
down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you,
‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit
at the table with you. 11For all who exalt themselves will be
humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
12He said also to the one who had invited
him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or
your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you
in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give a
banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And
you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at
the resurrection of the righteous.”

MARKED WITH THE CROSS of Christ forever,
we are claimed, gathered and sent for the sake of the world.” (ELCA Mission Statement)
CAMPUS MINISTRY of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America invites people in academic
settings more deeply into Jesus Christ and the community that bears his name,
so that they can discover and fulfill their vocation as disciples.
THE MISSION OF University Lutheran Church and
Student Center is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the message of God’s
abundant grace, to strengthen those who know their Lord and Savior and to reach
out to those who do not, equipping all, through Word and Sacrament, to serve
God.

WOMEN OF THE WORD BOOK GROUP: The WOW featured book for September is “Katharina
Von Bora: A Reformation Lift”, by Rudolf K. Markwald and Marilyn Morris
Markwald. The authors trace Katy’s
background, birth, childhood and early adult years. Also her marriage to Martin Luther, after she
had escaped from a convent because of what he taught. The book reveals the faith and legacy of a
woman who held steadfast to Christ in great adversity and need, and who also
advocated evangelical reforms. Come and
share the story of this remarkable woman with us. We meet on Fridays at noon in the church
fellowship hall. Bring your lunch if you
like. Call Arlis Scott (xxx-xxxx) or
Mary Sue Schnell (xxx-xxxx7) for information.
FOOD AND SHELTER FOR
FRIENDS: As
we return to the routines of school and the fall season, please remember those

Interested? Talk with Pastor Mike.
GIVE AN HOUR OR TWO to help keep University Lutheran looking good and in good repair. The facilities committee is looking for people willing to give an hour or two to take care of some odd jobs and projects around the church. Jobs range from simple cleaning to more “skilled” tasks. The facilities committee will provide all the necessary tools and materials. If you can help, please call Susy Jorgenson at xxx-xxxx to arrange your time and task. Thanks!
TEAM LEADERS AND USHERS are needed for second service. This is not a hard job, and you will be trained. It would only be for 1 or 2 Sunday’s a month. If you can help, please call Pastor Mike.
QUARTERLY STATEMENTS are on the counter. Please take yours home with you today.
The next REALLY, REALLY FREE MARKET is scheduled for Saturday, October 9 from 9 AM – 1 PM here at University Lutheran. Congregational participation is needed! If you can provide SERVICE, ENTERTAINMENT, ITEMS, CLOTHES, or SHARE A SKILL please fill out the form in the bulletin and return it to the church office by September 10. You do not have to remain for the entire four hours. Remember this is similar to a garage sale, but NO MONEY is exchanged. This is a way of reaching out and giving back to the Norman community. If you have questions, contact Cheryl Bredeson at cbredeson@cox.net or xxx-xxxx.
VOLUNTEER COOKS ARE NEEDED! For SOUL Wednesday dinner and bible studies. We are looking for some generous church members who are willing to donate dinner for about 12-15 hungry students. Please sign up for a day on the SOUL Bulletin Board in the narthex of the church. (See more details on the sign-up sheet). For many students, having a home cooked meal is the highlight of their week. We really appreciate all that you do. Contact Kristin Reed Klade with any questions or concerns.
SOUL WELCOME BACK BBQ is TODAY, August 29, following the second service. Congregation members and friends are invited to join in the food and fellowship as we welcome new and returning students. Please join us!

MEN’S PRAYER BREAKFAST will be Saturday, September 4 from 8:00-9:30 AM! Men, young and old, are invited to share a great breakfast (including eggs, beans, toaster waffles, meat, and more) and bible study. This month we will discuss Psalm 19 and talk about how we celebrate God’s creation as God’s people. Guests and visitors are always welcome!
SERMON TALK-BACK will resume on Sunday, September 12 at 7:00 PM. What is a “Sermon Talk-Back”? It is a bible study group that revisits Sunday mornings’ lessons, going into their themes and ideas with more depth than we can on Sunday morning. We also discuss the sermon and what the lessons have to teach us about our relationship with God and one another. If you have every wanted to explore Sunday morning’s texts and sermon further… this is the group for you!
WE WELCOME JAIME CARINI as this semester’s Intern Organist from the American Organ Institute at OU! We look forward to getting to know Jaime and having her lead us in worship. Stop by the organ and say “Hi!”
SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES, pre-K to adult, will resume on Sunday, September 12. Opening is at 9:55 AM. Classes start around 10 AM. Please grab some breakfast and head over to the Student Center. The kids will be using a new curriculum called SPARK specifically designed for small Sunday Schools. The Adults will be digging into the second half of Paul’s letter to the Romans.
