Week Ahead
Mary, Mother Of Our
Lord
Welcome to Worship!
A special welcome to
our guests and OU students! During the
offering you are invited to sign the Welcome Book at the end of the pew and
pass it along to those sitting with you.
Guests are also invited to sign the guest book in the entryway.
Today’s Focus
Mary’s role is
not limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John’s gospel, she is among the women
standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the gift
of the Spirit. Through all that happened
she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the ancient
promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful and focusing on
those as poor and powerless as Mary herself.
Large
print bulletins and listening aids are available from an usher.
The liturgy and songs
for this service are
projected on the screen
at the front of the worship area.

P: In
the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C:
Amen.
P:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your
holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let
us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence
is kept for reflection.
P: Most
merciful God,
C: We
confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we
have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved
our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy
on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so
that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to
the glory of your holy name. Amen.
P: God,
who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive
together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus
Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through
the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
C: Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 61:7-11
7 Because
their shame was double,
and dishonor
was proclaimed as their lot,
therefore they
shall possess a double portion;
everlasting joy
shall be theirs.
8 For
I the LORD love justice,
I hate robbery
and wrongdoing,
I will
faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make
an everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their
descendants shall be known among the nations,
and their
offspring among the peoples;
all who see
them shall acknowledge
that they are a
people whom the LORD has blessed.
10 I
will greatly rejoice in the LORD,
my whole being
shall exult in my God;
for he has
clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered
me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom
decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride
adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For
as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden
causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord GOD
will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up
before all the nations.

Psalm 34:1-9 Alternating Women and Men
1 I will bless the Lord ‘ at all times;*
his praise shall ever be ‘ in my
mouth.
2 I will glory ‘ in the Lord;*
let the humble hear ‘ and rejoice.
3 Proclaim with me the greatness ‘ of the
Lord;*
let us exalt his ‘ name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he ‘ answered
me*
and delivered me out of ‘ all my
terror.
5 Look upon him ‘ and be radiant,*
and let not your faces ‘ be ashamed.
6 I called in my affliction, and ‘ the
Lord heard me*
and saved me from ‘ all my troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encompasses ‘ those who fear him,*
and he will de- ‘ liver them.
8 Taste and see that the ‘ Lord is good;*
happy are they who ‘ trust in him!
9 Fear the Lord, you that ‘ are his saints,*
for those who fear ‘ him lack nothing.
Second Reading Galatians 4: 4-7
4But when the fullness of time had come,
God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in
order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption
as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the
Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7So
you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir,
through God.

Backpack and School Supply Blessing
Students and
teachers gather at the front of the worship area with their backpacks, book bags
and briefcases.
P: These
backpacks remind us that a new school year is about to begin. Today, O Lord, we lift them up and ask you to
bless them and those who bear them.
These school
supplies remind us of those in our community whose poverty even makes going to
school a challenge. Today, O Lord, we
pray for these families and ask that you would bless them through these gifts.
Let us pray.
A brief
silence.
The Director
of Christian Education prays for the students and teachers .
DCE: God of
wisdom, be with the students who carry these backpacks and book bags. Help them to be diligent in their studies,
and focused in their work. Make them
aware of the gifts and talents you have given them, and show them how they
might sharpen those gifts for your glory.
C: Amen.
DCE: God of
wisdom, be with teachers and all those who work with students. Help them to see their work as a ministry; as
a holy calling which comes from you.
Grant them energy, creativity, passion and patience, so they might help
their students discover and use the gifts you have given them.
C: Amen.
DCE: God of wisdom, we ask you to bless the school supplies we have
brought to your altar today. May they
find their way into the hands of those who need them. Bless the students who receive them so that,
through these gifts, they may grow in knowledge and wisdom, improve their lives
and the life of this community.
C: Amen.
DCE: God of
grace, may this community of faith be a source of support, encouragement and
prayer for all those in education.
C: God
strengthen our ministry to those who teach and those who learn.
P:
We pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our teacher and savior,
C: Amen.
Prayers of Intercession
P: Gathered
together as God’s people in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in
need, and all of God’s creation.
A brief silence is observed.
After each prayer:
A: …Hear us, O God,
C: Your mercy is great.
At the conclusion of the prayers:
P: Into
your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your
mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
C: Amen.
Peace
P: The
peace of Christ be with you always.
C: And
also with you.
The
people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace.

A: God
of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in

your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ,
our redeemer and Lord.

Great Thanksgiving
The presiding minister continues:
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that
we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise…
…we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Eucharistic Prayer
P: Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.
Blessed are you for your promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:
C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
P: With this bread and cup
we remember your Word dwelling among us,
full of grace and truth.
We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
C: Come, Lord Jesus.
P: Holy God, we long for your Spirit.
Come among us.
Bless this meal.
May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people.
Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
C: Come, Holy Spirit.
P: All praise and glory are yours,
Holy One of Israel,
Word of God incarnate,
Power of the Most High,
one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
P: Gathered
into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy
name,
thy kingdom
come,
thy will be
done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive
those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us
from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and
ever. Amen.
