Welcome to Worship
A special welcome to
visitors and guests! Please sign the
red welcome book located at the end of each pew and pass it along to those
seated with you. Guests are also invited
to sign the guest book in the entryway.
Today’s Focus
In today’s gospel, Jesus urges us to
take care and be on guard against all kinds of greed. We who have died with Christ in holy baptism
have also been raised with him and are encouraged to elevate our thinking,
seeking the “things that are above.” To
that end we seek the sustenance of the Lord’s supper and the encouragement of
God’s word.
Large print bulletins and listening aids are available
from an usher.
The liturgy and songs for this service are
projected on the screen at the front of the worship area.

Confession and Forgiveness
The
assembly stands.
P: In
the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: God
of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from
our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we
may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let
us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence
is kept for reflection.
P: Most
merciful God,
C: We confess that we are captive to sin and
cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and
lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the
glory of your holy name. Amen.
P: God,
who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made
us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of +
Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power
through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
C: Amen.

C: Benevolent God, you are the source, the
guide, and the goal of our lives. Teach
us to love what is worth loving, to reject what is offensive to you, and to
treasure what is precious in your sight, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord.

The assembly is seated.
First Reading Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, 2:18-23
R: Three readings from Ecclesiastes.
2 Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher,
vanity
of vanities! All is vanity.
12I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, 13applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. 14I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
2:18I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me 19—and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun? 23For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. This also is vanity.
R:
The word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be
to God.
Psalm 49:1-11 Sung
in Unison
1 Hear this, all you peoples; hearken, all you who dwell ‘ in the
world,*
you of high degree and low, rich and ‘ poor together.
2 My mouth shall ‘ speak of wisdom,*
and my heart shall meditate on ‘ understanding.
3 I will incline my ear ‘ to a proverb*
and set forth my riddle up- ‘ on the harp.
4 Why should I be afraid in ‘ evil days,*
when the wickedness of those at my ‘ heels surrounds me,
5 the wickedness of those who put their trust ‘ in their goods,*
and boast of ‘ their great riches?
6 We can never ran- ‘ som ourselves,*
or deliver to God the price ‘ of our life;
7 for the ransom of our life ‘ is so great,*
that we should never have e-‘ nough to pay it,
8 in order to live forev- ‘ er and ever,*
and never ‘ see the grave.
9 For we see that the wise die also; like the dull and stu- ‘ pid they
perish*
and leave their wealth to those who come ‘ after them.
10 Their graves shall be their homes forever,
their dwelling places from generation to ‘generation,*
though they call the lands after ‘ their own names.
11 Even though honored, they cannot’ live forever;*
they are like the ‘ beasts that perish.
Second Reading Colossians 3:1-11
R: A reading from Colossians.
1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your£ life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
5Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!

Gospel Acclamation
Holy Gospel Luke 12:13-21
P: The Holy Gospel according to the 12th
chapter of Luke.
13Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14But he said to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” 16Then he told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ 18Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

Hymn of the Day Take My Life, That I May Be 685
Apostles’ Creed
P: With
the whole church, let us confess our faith:
C: I believe
in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in
Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the
Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin
Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and
was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the
right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the
living and the dead.
I believe in
the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
Prayers of Intercession
P:
Gathered together as God’s people in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church,
those in need, and all of God’s creation.
A brief silence is observed.
After each prayer:
A: …Hear us, O God,
C: Your mercy is great.
At the conclusion of the prayers:
P: Into
your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your
mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
C: Amen.
Peace
P: The
peace of Christ be with you always.
C: And
also with you.
The
people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace.

A: God of mercy
and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in

your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ,
our redeemer and Lord.

Great Thanksgiving
The
presiding minister continues:
It is
indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we
should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise . . .
Here
the minister continues with the preface for the day, concluding:
. . . we
praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, Holy, Holy
Eucharistic Prayer
P: O God most mighty,
O God most merciful,
O God our rock and our salvation,
hear us as we praise,
call us to your table,
grant us your life.
When the earth was a formless void,
you formed order and beauty.
When Abraham and Sarah were barren,
you sent them a child.
When the Israelites were enslaved,
you led them to freedom.
Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath,
and the psalmists cried out for healing,
and full of compassion,
you granted the people your life.
You entered our sorrows in Jesus our brother.
He was born among the poor,
he lived under oppression,
he wept over the city.
With infinite love, he granted the people your life.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering his death, we cry out Amen.
Celebrating his resurrection, we shout Amen.
Trusting his presence in every time and place, we plead Amen.
O God, you are Breath: send your Spirit on this meal.
O God, you are Bread: feed us with yourself.
O God, you are wine: warm our hearts and make us one.
O God, you are Fire: transform us with hope.
O God most majestic,
O God most motherly,
O God our strength and our song,
you show us a vision of the tree of life
with fruits for all and leaves that heal the nations.
Grant us such life,
the life of the Father to the Son,
the life of the Spirit of our risen Savior,
life in you, now and forever.
C:
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
P:
Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give
us this day our daily bread;
and
forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against
us;
and
lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For
thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

WOMEN OF THE WORD BOOK
In August, WOW will revisit a Pulitzer Prize winner from 1961. The book is “To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee. This book takes readers to the roots of human behavior. It is innocence, experience, kindness, cruelty, love, hatred, humor, and pathos. It is overflowing with life.
Come read with us, share your insights into the selected books, and bring your own suggestions for books to read.
We meet on Fridays at noon in the church fellowship hall. Bring your lunch if you like. Call Arlis Scott – xxx-xxxx, or Mary Sue Schnell - xxx-xxxx, for questions, suggestions, and/or answers.
CONFIRMATION MENTORS are needed for the Fall. Confirmation Mentors work individually with one of our ninth grade confirmands to prepare them for their Confirmation in October. If you are interested, or would like to find out more, please talk with Pastor Mike or Chris Lee.
ARE YOU A CARING PERSON? A GOOD LISTENER? If so, we need you to join the University Lutheran Care Team. Members of the Care Team will receive 20 hours of training this fall, and then work with Pastor Mike to provide care for members and friends of the congregation in a variety of situations. Interested? Talk with Pastor Mike.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED to do odd jobs and projects around the church. The facilities committee will provide all the tools and materials necessary… we just need people to do the work! Jobs range from simple cleaning and yard work to more “skilled” tasks. Please consider donating an hour or two on an evening or weekend anytime this summer to help maintain your church. If you can help, please call Susy Jorgenson at xxx-xxxx to arrange your time and task. Thanks!
